I really admire Matsumoto and loved his first three movies, but… That one was awful.

You can kinda understand why the Japanese haven’t gravitated to Matsumoto’s films given how much absurdity he uses. Although I laughed at some parts, the movie’s just too all over the place to really enjoy.

in theory he should have an in-built audience but the Japanese public doesn’t seem to like comedians behind the camera, admittedly I have a small sample group i.e Kitano, Matusmoto and Itao. Kitano has been making movies for over 20 years and his most successful movies to date are his most recent ones (Outrage 1 - 2) He has consistently flopped at home but was taken seriously and gained a reputation as a director abroad, he’s not recognised as a director in Japan though.

I admit R100 wasn’t great but I have a feeling he’ll get better (when he makes a serious film) I think he’ll never get major success as a film maker in Japan no matter how good of a movie he makes simply because just like Kitano his in-built audience wont take him seriously as a director.

From what I heard, the foreign audience at Toronto’s film festival were actually mostly positive (apparently the local paper gave him a one-star out of five rating though). It’s really strange that Japanese audiences panned his film while the foreign audience were more accepting. Like you, I thought he would have an audience in Japan. I think Matsumoto has his reputation established overseas, like Kitano, but it’s gonna be hard for him to be accepted at home.

Shinagawa Hiroshi of duo ShinagawaShoji has also directed films, although I’m not sure how well they were received though.

Matsumoto has actually done a couple of interviews in English about the difficulties he has in his home country vs abroad.

Thanks for the articles. I can understand a little bit better now how Matsumoto likes to structure his films. I do think that his ideas are conveyed a bit haphazardly in his films but he’ll get better if he gains more experience. Certainly a love comedy from him would have a lot of promise

Yeah, I agree. Just like Kitano, if he keeps at it, some really good stuff will eventually be shown. Although this one was awful, he tried with it. Every movie is completely different from the others, so who knows what will be his next work, he could even try animation, who knows? Actually, he already tried that, but he could again.

For anyone in the UK, R100 is showing tonight at 11:15pm on Film 4 (free channel on Freeview etc.) in Japanese with subtitles.

I Just spotted when flicking though the channels! might give it a look. Got to love Film 4! They are the best when it comes to airing Japanese films in the UK.

Yeah it’s fantastic for foreign films in general, caught some really interesting films from around the globe on it, love that they take the risk to air things in their original language too. I should really check it out more often, just haven’t had the time to sit and watch that much TV, just happened to be browsing the TV guide.
