Justin.tv dead - what does this mean for New Year's?

Just a note of concern. Justin.tv just officially went down for good today, meaning that all of the Kazan channels, ducktoaster, and the other streams are gone. I’m sure we can figure something out, but with all of the standbys dead I thought someone should point it out in time for us to find alternatives before it’s too late (and honestly, even five months ahead of time feels to me like I should be doing more at this point).

Yeah i saw that earlier when i was going to see some Arino Katcho stream. And i usually like to fell asleep with GNT stream as backround.
That’s suck.

For new year NTV live, it’s ok with NIJI. We can see there and speak on this forum’s chat.

But for stream 24/24. I don’t know.

What do you mean with 24/24 stream? If you mean by the NIJI’s channel, their stream works 24/7 (Even when the channel goes on a ‘‘Break’’ mode on midnight.)

If you mean the 24/7 stream, he moved to Ustream.

There are some other streaming sites like ustream (was just about to link the channel jbug mentioned after doing a quick look over there).

And if you google "Justin TV Alternative" or "JTV Alternative", limiting search results to the past month, you’ll see a lot of recent discussion across the net in light of the shutdown with people suggesting lesser known sites:

http://veetle.com/index.php/listing/index/shows https://www.connectcast.tv

But yeah NIJI + a chatroom is an alternative (if people don’t overload NIJI’s bandwidth… ) .

I think NIJI is a good alternative, and using the forum’s chatroom could be a nice experience :D
Though sometimes NIJI’s streams tend to freeze because of the buffering and stuff.

From what I’ve read, Justin.tv has asked users to move over to Twitch. I don’t know much about it, I have a few gamer friends who use it. I went to the site once and found that it was much like Justin.tv. I’m more interested now that Justin has closed. I don’t know Twitch’s rules about streaming third-party content. We might see the New Year’s Special there next time.

Twitch only allow video games. it’s not for stream videos. :!:

As andylau-fr says, Twitch only allows video game content so it’d get taken down fast.

Justin.TV used to have a category for Gaming but as it grew the company decided to create a separate frontend website for those (though still hosted on JTV’s backend servers). After that the Gaming side grew even more, especially after they introduced a partnership program (similar to Youtube) so that streamers can earn revenue from ads and subscriptions. People can now even stream straight from their Xbox or Playstation onto Twitch and e-sports events can get over 100k viewers. When there are big events it can really strain the server bandwidth, which shared space with JTV still, so it seems they decided to focus their attention on the more lucrative market instead. I just hope the rumours of Google buying them out won’t come true… I really don’t like all the enforcements Google did with Youtube to further their "Google hive" (Google Plus).

Anyway I do recommend Twitch though, been watching live game broadcasters since they started out on Justin.TV’s Gaming category back in 2010. I’m not into e-sports (e.g. tournaments for shooters, fighters, starcraft, mmo arenas etc.) more into funny or friendly commentary gamers. There’s no good gaming-related programs on TV here, not since GamesMaster in the 1990s, so Twitch is great. :inlove:

The rumor is true my good friend. Youtube (Google) already owns Twitch (The deal was about 1 billion dollars!!! :cash: :cash: :cash: :cash: ) So in short time we can expect all the google and YT advertise now on Twitch

Disappointed they closed it but something else will replace it. Love to watch Ducktoasters channel for my Gaki fix. Ducktoaster does have a channel on Twitch but its offline. [url:y04081dc]http://www.twitch.tv/ducktoaster[/url:y04081dc]

For whatever reason, Twitch (and even Google) staff still haven’t confirmed anything though. The article Eurogamer refers to only say they heard from "unamed sources". From Wikipedia’s page on Twitch:

[quote:2t0njnis]On July 24, 2014, it was reported by VentureBeat that Google signed a deal to purchase Twitch for approximately $1 billion. As of July 2014, the report – which originated in May 2014 – remains officially unconfirmed. On August 5, 2014, the original Justin.tv site was abruptly shut down, citing a need to focus resources entirely on Twitch.[/quote:2t0njnis]

Personally I think it’s in Twitch’s best interests to keep their business model to themselves, in the long run it could be worth more than 1 billion. I’m sure Youtube has made Google far more than 1 billion since they bought it for 1.65 billion in 2006. Of course it’s just a vein hope of mine because it seems more likely they’ll get those dollar signs in their eyes and take the quick cash now rather than the long term investment… sigh

Haha yay! It was a great show that didn’t take itself too seriously. There was another great game review show that aired after that 1999~2001 called "Bits" hosted by an all female cast that was also really fun!

No dude, is true. It happen like in the Comic Con week or so. Is confirmed: http://www.gamespot.com/articles/google … 0-6421288/

The Gamespot article is referring to the same thing as the Eurogamer article, the [url=http://venturebeat.com/2014/07/24/googles-1b-purchase-of-twitch-confirmed-joins-youtube-for-new-video-empire/:3kf1kwyx]VentureBeat/GamesBeat July 2014 report[/url:3kf1kwyx] that doesn’t name sources. I think if the Gamespot article was confident it wouldn’t end with ""[b:3kf1kwyx]If[/b:3kf1kwyx] the acquisition does go through". I’ve heard there might be some legal issues regarding monopolisation for Google to buyout another video streaming business.

Like I say though a vein hope since it seems more likely it will go through… I am bracing myself for the "You cannot view this channel without logging into Google Plus"… Another hopeful alternative is if the deal includes more of a partnership arrangement than a complete take-over. Twitch was already offering a button to export livestream highlights to Youtube channels but it wasn’t used that often. Right now they seem to be reviving the feature to be more streamlined. If that’s what the Google deal entails that won’t be so bad… but eh who am I kidding.

Ah hopes dashed, looks like Google Youtube policies are already hitting Twitch as suddenly a lot of videos were removed or muted for copyright strikes. Problem is muting the music also means muting the persons own commentary. I’ve heard some got their videos audio erased even though it had public domain music due to overzealous filtering. In other instances they got muted because the game’s own soundtrack was copyrighted (e.g. Oblivion)… Sad times.

A lot of gamers are moving to Hitbox, an alternative game streaming site (like Ustream vs JustinTV, don’t really like the site as much as Twitch, but looks like there’ll be less of a choice in future!).

A joke picture someone posted to Twitter of "the future":

Well I did say it was only a thin hope… I hate change sits in old rocking chair pouting |(

I really want the new year special to be live translated as it makes new years eve amazing for me. Will anyone be live translating? I remember someone doing it last year but cannot remember his/her name.

Please tell me someone will be translating it live and that we find an alternative for justin.tv!

I think it’s typically up in the air regarding who will be available for any kind of translation for the batsu (either live or after the fact) until close to the wire unfortunately. Last year with the Earth Defence batsu it was looking grim as there was no active translator (all had other commitments in life come up after the teacher batsu). Thankfully Mickstar stepped forward as a volunteer for Team Gaki, then others followed to back them up. But again many have returned to other commitments since although new Gaki episodes air every Sunday :( I think there will be some who live translate or volunteer for subbing but often we don’t know until the traffic boost after people go "oh hey isn’t the batsu airing this month?".

Alternatives for Justin TV have been found in this thread. :)
