[Tutorial] How to Time Subs with a Gamepad

Recently I learned how to use a USB game controller with Aegisub. It makes timing videos a bit easier as you can mash buttons on the gamepad instead of using combinations of keyboard shortcuts.

I hope people will find it useful. Feel free to ask questions and be sure to share any typeset/timed stuff with translators (e.g. Mickstar813 via [url=http://www.gaki-no-tsukai.com/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=2176:173k1ktm]this forum[/url:173k1ktm], Skype or Team Gaki’s website / Facebook).

Very creative idea. We want to see this in practice! I prefer typesetting on keyboard. But then again, I haven’t tried your version. I don’t even own a game controller. Could you explain the process more in detail if you want? :)

For typesetting (positioning and editing styles) I use a mouse and keyboard as it’s quicker. I also still use a keyboard for typing out words of course. The gamepad is more of an alternative for timing, saves me from RSI a bit as a change of pace from keyboarding heh.

With my key setup it goes like this:
△, △, ← , □ , △ , ○ , ×, △
Which is: Play, Pause, Step back, Set start of line, Play, Set end of line, Insert new line after, Play.

Yeah unfortunately if you don’t have a PC gamepad or a console such as a Playstation or XBOX, you may not have a controller lying around.

If you’d like to see it in practice there are some demo videos linked on the Evernote tutorial page:

Here’s some quick point-in-time jump links, I put up a visual display of what controller buttons I’m pressing bottom right:

Wow! Impressive, It seems to work very well for you.

Certainly a good reason to have an alternative method. I can also imagine, that a game pad fits more comfortably in your hand so it’s less straining on both your arms, hands and the weird way one can sit in sometimes when infront of a computer. A game controller might make it more relaxed. Thanks for sharing. It shows your dedication. Very nice :)
