Question about Yama-san

Feel free to delete if this was already explained at some point but I was just wondering after all these years.

Matsumoto + Hamada = Downtown
Endo + Tanaka = Coc. (forget full spelling)

But then there is Yamazaki who is just by himself, has he just never decided to join one of the group, or create his own? Or are they not adding him for a reason?

Hi,
don’t think its about "not letting him join" :D
When you create a Comedy-Duo its not like a opening a company where everybody can apply to…

Guess hes just a one-man-comedian like its common.

As far as I know, he had participated in a dou.

[quote:17kyvm76]Tennensozai is Yoshimoto’s collection of young comedians formed in 1991. The group consisted of Ameagari, FUJIWARA, Ninety-nine and Team-0 (Yamasaki’s former duo) just to name a few. Hosshan was also a part of it.

I searched the group’s name and found this:

I think he’s just chosen to be a solo comedian. The Japanese Wikipedia page for Yamasaki seems to have a LOT more information than the English Wikipedia page.

This is what I could derive from Google translate regarding his early duo career:

[quote:h1dihi8a]- 1988 formed GSX(ガスペケ).

  • Renamed to "TEAM-0" a combination name in 1989. Appeared on "Downtown" to be broadcast after the first regular appearances.
  • Grand Prix Award for Best New Comedy Newcomer ABC 12th 1991.
  • Dissolution "TEAM-0" in 1993. Started working as a solo entertainer without a group or duo.[/quote:h1dihi8a]

Found this 1989 video of Team -0 (Yamasaki and Hiromitsu Noriyasu as a duo on stage):

The Japanese wiki goes on to list his various TV/Movie/Radio/etc. work both current and past. But I think that basically he just appears on occassion on different things, which was the center of a joke for the 2006 Police Station Batsu:
[hide:h1dihi8a][quote:h1dihi8a]
Boss: How many TV shows are you on per week?
Yamasaki: I'm on internet radio.
Boss: Internet radio… Respectable occupation. Anything else?
Yamasaki: What else…? [laughs]
Matsumoto [on commentary]: You laughed at the fact that you have no routine gigs on TV.
Boss: Maybe you can help me with this.
Detective: How many TV shows are you on?
Yamasaki: In the Osaka area, I've got a small gig and I'm on internet radio in the Tokyo area.
[later on]
Yamasaki: So what if I'm not on TV so often?
Endo: Hosei-san, will you try not to make us laugh please?
[/quote:h1dihi8a][/hide:h1dihi8a]

From what I can tell the regular internet radio gig is mostly on K’z Station’s "おしゃべりやってまーす" as far back as 2003 to as recent as 2012.

He also seems dedicated to solo work as a rakugo performer (comedy storyteller), to the point he’s reportedly changing his entertainer name next year from Yamasaki Hosei to the rakugo title he’s been using on stage (Tsukitei Hosei).

In one of the Kiki’s (Orange Juice) they make a joke on this. After Yamasaki gets his punishment he steps to the front, then ends up kneeling down and bowing in pain. They say "Here is a sit down comedian (Rakugo-ka) starting a performance".
